Burnt Structure #1

Timber Installation / sculpture

2.5m X 2.5m X 2.5m

Made from 20 pieces of softwood (2” X 2” PAR) of various lengths (between 2m and 3m lengths), which have been connected together using halving joints at random intervals and at different angles. The structure sits on the floor but not all the pieces are in contact with the floor, some hang in space supported by the other pieces.

The structure looks as if it is in collapse, as if a once strong rigid form has been frozen in time – mid fall. To enhance this concept the entire surface of the wood has been scorched to give it a dramatic texture.

The unmistakeable odour of burnt wood can be at once familiar and slightly disconcerting. Also, if you touch it you will get soot on your hands.
